How to Extend the Lifespan of Your Air Conditioner

Man Adjusting Digital Central Heating Thermostat At Home

Approximately 88% of U.S. homes have some form of air conditioning. In many areas, reliable cooling is necessary to remain healthy, comfortable, and productive throughout the summer. ACs are also a significant investment, and maximizing their lifespans is integral to getting the biggest return on that investment. Let’s explore how you can make your air conditioner last as long as possible while maintaining its peak efficiency.

Invest in a Smart Thermostat

An AC cycles on and off as needed to keep your home cool. Each cycle causes normal wear and tear on the system’s major components, including the compressor. You can extend your AC’s lifespan by reducing how often it cycles and how long those cycles are. A basic programmable thermostat can reduce cycle frequency and length, while also lowering your annual cooling costs by up to 10%. Consider all the cycles you can save while sleeping, at work, and away on vacation. Smart thermostats often have additional features that can help, including energy monitoring, occupancy sensing, and predictive maintenance.

Schedule Seasonal AC Maintenance

Seasonal cooling maintenance is the most important step you can take toward extending your AC system’s life. Most AC warranties require it as a condition of coverage. Tune-ups also improve efficiency, lower operating costs, and prevent repairs. During a tune-up, a technician will perform a multipoint inspection, thoroughly clean your equipment, and correct any normal wear and tear. The cleaning alone is a big deal. Buildup on your condenser and evaporator coils can otherwise cause your AC to cycle more often and for longer periods. Tune-ups are also an opportunity for proactive repairs, such as replacing worn ball bearings before they fail.

Keep Maintenance Documents for Your Records

AC manufacturing defects are uncommon, but warranty coverage can protect you when they occur. Warranties often cover the replacement of major components, such as the compressor pump. As mentioned, AC warranties typically require annual tune-ups. With each tune-up, your technician will provide you with documentation of it for your records. Keep those papers safe in case you ever need to file a warranty claim.

Use an Appropriate HVAC Filter and Change It Regularly

The HVAC industry measures filter effectiveness with the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV). A filter with a higher MERV rating provides better filtration. When choosing a filter, however, do not exceed the AC’s limit, which can create too much pressure and strain. Check your filter at least once a month and replace it as needed. You’ll know to replace it because you’ll see dust accumulating on the outer surface or hear a whistling sound.

Maintain a Clean Outdoor Cabinet

AC systems have outdoor equipment in a cabinet, including the condenser coil, compressor pump, and compressor fan. Keep that equipment as clean as possible to maximize airflow. For the best results, maintain a perimeter of at least 1 foot and as much as 3 feet. That space should be free of bushes, overhanging branches, and other growth. Check the cabinet at least once a month and clear out any buildup of leaves and other debris.

Schedule Routine Duct Services

Leaky ducts are a prevalent problem with central ACs that can undermine comfort, energy efficiency, and even AC lifespan. Schedule a duct camera inspection every couple of years. You can usually schedule that service alongside your spring cooling tune-up. The average household will need professional duct cleaning every three to five years. If you do have duct leakage, duct sealing and other duct repair techniques can eliminate it.

Consider Investing in a Whole-House Dehumidifier

Ideally, you should maintain relative humidity in your home at 50% or less in summer. If you have trouble reaching that target through AC alone, consider adding a dehumidifier. It will provide greater comfort and can lower your overall energy consumption. Your AC won’t have to work as hard or for as long, and that will extend its lifespan.

Lower Your Cooling Demands

Set a reasonable temperature target, and use a programmable or smart thermostat to maintain it. Take advantage of ceiling fans wherever possible for improved circulation and the wind-chill effect. Block out the sun with shades, curtains, and other window treatments.
